A colposcopy is a medical examination focusing on the cervix's health condition. Nowadays, people did not pay attention to their health that much, as it is a consequence of their lifestyle and is inconvenient. However, health is something that should be maintained as much as possible, including the check-up for the current condition. 


What is Colposcopy

Colposcopy is one of the examination tools for the cervix that can detect the disease that might occur there. People normally ignore some randomly occurring symptom and think of it as something they can overlook, without knowing that it might be the signal of the disease. The colposcopy will examine the area of the cervix, vulva and vagina to detect whether there is any sign of disease or not. The abnormalities will reveal through the cervix biopsy and the result can be pointed out the disease that occurs or is possible to occur in the future.

Regularly, the colposcopy procedure is a harmless method. Most of the people who have this procedure did not receive any side effects but there might be a rare case that the complication occurs. Colposcopy Process

For the sequences of the colposcopy procedure, it can be divided into 3 parts.

The first thing is to prepare the person who receives this examination to lay down in the proper position.  The legs will be placed on the supports same as the position of the pelvic examination.

The second thing is the speculum. The physician will place the speculum to keep the entrance open so that they can see the cervix. Then, the coloscope will be placed away from the vulva by around an inch. The light that shines into the vagina will let the physician observe through the lens. 

The last thing is the test. The vagina will be wiped with cotton to clean the mucus. Afterwards, the physician will coat the cotton with a substance that can detect abnormalities in the vagina such as vinegar. The tingling or the burning sense is a sign that there might be abnormalities to pay attention to there.  


Post-Colposcopy Care

After receiving the colposcopy procedure, there might be an occurrence of slight pain for a few days. It is recommended to take the pain reliever because the pain will be the same as period pain. Plus, there might be discharge or bleeding after colposcopy from the vagina. It will also take a few days to be back to normal.

Is colposcopy painful?

Normally, the colposcopy procedure is without any pain. While the examination, there will be only the feeling of pressing by the speculum. Moreover, there will be a burning or tingling sensation from the test provided by vinegar or other solution. 

Can I do colposcopy while on period?

Actually, a colposcopy can be performed during the menstrual period, but it is recommended to perform it not on those days. 

Can I do colposcopy during pregnancy?

A colposcopy is able to be performed for the person who is pregnant. The colposcopy will examine the change of the cells for those who are pregnant. It is recommended to perform it after they gave birth to check if there are any abnormalities.

Colposcopy is the examination that is performed to detect the change of tissues in the vagina, vulva and cervix. As it is mentioned, people may dismiss any sign of abnormalities because they did not realise it is an abnormality.
