Causes of Death and Effects on People’s Perception about Death [Natural Death]

What Is Natural Death?

Ancient beliefs and old traditions are not always old-fashioned and wrong. For instance, the concept of Natural Death is still floating in the wind, unproven. Doctors may describe a natural death when a person dies with a heart stroke, in absence of illness and physical injuries. Still, in that case, the heart stroke is the cause of that person’s death. Therefore, is dying of a heart stroke still considered natural death or is it now something else?

It is obvious that people would not die without any cause. Heart stroke, aging, injuries, murders, and accidents are examples of the causes of death. However, these causes do not have to be sorcery either. Therefore, the term natural death and sorcery as the general cause of death is too extreme and misleading. It would be clearer to regard causes of death along the spectrum consisting of active death (such as non-infectious decease, heart stroke, some kind of accidents, and suicide) and passive death (some kind of accidents, murder and infectious diseases). According to a discussion with Professor David Gegeo, one of the renowned Pacific scholars from the Solomon Islands, this similar spectrum is defined as “Hot and Cold death” in the Solomon Islands.

I have discussed about why must living things die with a Thai monk,  Samana Binkao. He simply quoted one Buddha’s speech “
กมฺมุนา วตฺตตีโลโก” and explained that it is natural for living things to die because death is the resonant of a person’s or thing’s own doings (karma) in the past and present life. This coincides with the universally accepted concept of duality which holds that “everything that has a beginning has an end.”

And, Christianity assumes death as a natural phenomenon and seeks to explain joining God after death instead of seeking to explain why living things die. So, who’s right? No, we are not here to debate which belief has the correct explanation of what happens after one’s dead. Rather, we would conclude that the main religions all believe that death is natural for humans. This is the most significant difference between religion and the traditional belief.

This concludes to one thing to be sure about: death is inevitable and natural for all living things.
