Death Is Universal But Traditions Regarding Death Are Local
Although I have been discussing death and traditions regarding death as if these two are so parallel with each other, I would like to point out that they are not always the case. Death, for example, is a phenomenon that happens universally. However, it is the local believers and their traditions that create the diversity. Therefore, admitting that some beliefs in the Pacific are similar to those in South-east Asia, I contend that this could just be an incidence because the subject we are examining is so universally common; people in these two regions might not necessarily be ancestors of each other. More geographically uniqueness like art patterns on artifacts and anthropological evidence should make a much firmer argument on the theory of migration.
Ultimately, studying about the beliefs, rites, and traditions about deaths in various countries in the Pacific as well as Southeast Asia did give me enlightenment. Death is commonly feared of. Several explanations regarding many aspect of deaths namely the coming of death, the cause of death, definitions on causes of death and natural death, mourning and burial customs, and life after death were established ultimately to console those who are, some day, leaving or going to be left behind. So to say, there is nothing wrong or special about death. Nonetheless, who would wish to leave such a wonderful world we are living in?
